Catalysts: Speeding Up the World

How chemicals change the speed of our reality.

Share:

In chemistry, a catalyst is a substance that makes a chemical reaction happen faster without being consumed itself. Think of it like a shortcut through a mountain. Without the catalyst, the reaction has to climb over a high 'energy hill'—this is called activation energy. A catalyst provides a lower path, allowing the reaction to zip through with much less effort. This is how we mass-produce everything from plastic bottles to fertilizer, making modern life possible.

Try this at home

Add a small amount of yeast to a mixture of hydrogen peroxide. You will see a vigorous reaction producing bubbles, as the yeast acts as a catalyst to break down the peroxide rapidly.
