The Secret Life of Heat Exchangers

How we move energy around to keep things cool or warm.

Share:

Heat exchangers are devices that transfer heat from one fluid to another without the fluids ever mixing. Think of your refrigerator or your car radiator. Inside, there are pipes carrying hot fluid nestled right next to pipes carrying cold fluid. Heat naturally moves from hot to cold, so the heat 'leaks' out of the hot pipe and into the cold one. This keeps the engine from melting or your milk from spoiling by moving the heat energy exactly where we want it to go.

Try this at home

Fill a balloon with water and hold a lit match underneath it. The water absorbs the heat from the rubber, preventing the balloon from popping, which mimics how heat exchangers protect sensitive components.
