Biocompatibility: Designing Materials That Play Nice

Why your body doesn't reject medical implants.

Share:

When we put materials like titanium or certain plastics into the body, they must be biocompatible. This means the material must perform its function without causing a harmful immune response. If the body thinks a foreign object is a virus or bacteria, it will attack it, leading to inflammation or rejection. Engineers use surface chemistry to coat implants with proteins or textures that 'trick' the body into accepting the device as part of the system rather than an invader.

Try this at home

Place a piece of clean plastic in a glass of water and a piece of raw metal in a glass of salt water. Observe how the salt water causes the metal to react faster, showing why engineers must choose non-reactive materials for medical implants.
