The Energy Balance
Why you cannot get something for nothing in energy systems.
The first rule of energy engineering is the law of conservation of energy: energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed. If you put 100 units of energy into a machine, you can never get more than 100 units out. In fact, you will always get less because some of it will inevitably be 'lost' as heat due to friction or resistance. This is what we call efficiency. When engineers design a car or a power plant, their main goal is to minimize these losses. They look for ways to capture wasted heat or reduce friction, turning as much of that initial input into useful work as possible. Every time you see a lightbulb get warm, you are seeing energy that isn't helping light the room—it is energy 'slipping away.' Understanding this balance is the first step toward designing greener, more effective technologies for our future.

Rub your hands together vigorously for 30 seconds. Feel the heat? That is 'wasted' energy from your motion, illustrating how energy transforms from movement to heat in every system.
