Understanding Carbon Footprints

Learn how engineers calculate the total environmental impact of a product.

Share:

A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a tool environmental engineers use to see the 'cradle-to-grave' impact of a product. It is not just about how much electricity a toaster uses; it is about the mining of the metal, the fuel used to ship it, the energy consumed in the factory, and how it gets recycled at the end. By looking at the whole picture, engineers can identify where the biggest environmental costs are hidden, often realizing that changing a manufacturing process is more effective than just changing a single material.

Try this at home

Look at a single item in your room and trace its journey: where were the raw materials found, where was it assembled, and what happens when you throw it away?
